How to refinish a picture frame by putting small pieces of masking tape all over it and then spray painting?

I have finished covering it with the masking tape, but now I'm unsure of how to proceed. I'd like to have the frame in a walnut (like) finish possibly with some gold antiquing. What do I use? Spray paint or wood stain or what other options are there? How to refinish a picture frame by putting small pieces of masking tape all over it and then spray painting?
if you use spray paint, you may want to use a primer/sealer first or the paint will keep soaking into the wood and look uneven. I would go with a minwax polyurethane walnut stain. you can get a satin or gloss finish. for the antiqing--I dunno--if you use gold leaf, you have to buy the stuff that it sticks to %26amp; paint it wherever you'd like the gold leaf to stick %26amp; then put another coat of minwax over the gold leaf keeping in mind that it is walnut stain %26amp; will darken the gold leaf. if you don't want the gold darker, then you gotta buy a clearcoat. How to refinish a picture frame by putting small pieces of masking tape all over it and then spray painting?
My Brownie troop did this for a banquet centerpiece. We used shoe polish. After you rub the shoe polish off dry brush with dull gold paint.
I did the very same thing with a large mirror but I used Zar wood stain and then used a second color to add more color in the detail of the frame. I then sprayed the frame with an antique flat spray polyurethane. www.ugl.com/zar/
