Can you spray paint wood?

So, I got an old wooden bookshelf for free, it's cute and a good size but the wood is ugly. It also clashes with my decor(which everyone knows is a tragedy :)) I want to spray paint it black, but I'm not sure if you can spray paint wood? It's unfinished wood, no gloss or anything like that. Can I spray paint it cleanly? And, what brands of spray paint are best? Can you spray paint wood?
give it a good sanding first, hit it with a good primer. that should seal the wood and give a surface for the paint to adhere to. just make sure that when you spray the shelf you make a sweeping motion with the paint, keep the spray can back a ways from the shelf, this will help with reduce steaks of paint from forming. Can you spray paint wood?
not likely, as the finish previously on the wood affects spray paint, cracking, flaking, not adhering

if it was fresh wood, then you could prime and paint with spray
use primer after you light sand(scuff) and spray away. that is how they make black laquer finishes, clear cote after paint and it will last for years.
